Artist: Ryan Penn
Artist Statement:

Ryan Penn is a draftsman and painter who graduated from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2004 with a degree in printmaking.  He works with a variety of different media in a monochromatic style.

During his time at PAFA he developed a strong interest in woodcut printmaking.  Ryan now works directly on wood with graphite, charcoal, and a variety of wood stains and thin layers of house paint.  His subject matter is mainly landscape with an interest in architecture, neighborhoods, and nostalgic places from his youth.

The pieces on display for the Fairmount arts crawl are all inspired from the beautiful Fairmount neighborhood, where he also resides, that is soaked with history, character, and a feeling of place.

Artist Statement:

Referring to nature and the Internet, I introduce relationships between foreign imagery and the endemic role of the communicative sub-realities that inform my daily life. The character and destiny of an ethnic or societal group are often determined by its inferior elements, but the rejected and the failed are often the raw material of the nation’s future. Stacking of the inadequate material and sludge, and the build-up of the trivialities of mistakes made with paint and mark-making breed the ethno-societal groups that rule in my worlds.
